Charged! Water purification with electricity
ThemeEnergy & Nutrient Factory, Innovation / new techniques
Summary
During electrocoagulation, iron plates are charged which causes the iron to dissolve. The charge of the pollutants is neutralized by the dissolved iron letting the particles coagulate and finally settle. Electrocoagulation can replace dosage of iron(III)chloride, possibly making iron dosing more safe and decreasing the CO2 footprint of the process. Electrocoagulation removed COD, bacteria, metals and nutrients.
The electrocoagulation process step will be further optimised and several strategies will be tested to recover the resources from the produced electrocoagulation sludge.
